Sundays in Lent

The gospel passages for Lent begin in Matthew’s Gospel (Matthew 4:1-11) as we hear about Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness. The devil attempts to derail Jesus from his mission and ministry by offering him things that could be appealing to Jesus. This appeal is seen in the First Reading for the day from Genesis 2:15-17 and Genesis 3:1-7 when the serpent tempts Eve, challenging God’s command, “You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil“. And so the Lenten journey begins.

The following Sundays in Lent bring us passages from John’s Gospel. These are familiar stories to many:Nicodemus visiting Jesus at night, Jesus and the woman at the well, Jesus healing the blind man, and Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. (John 3:1-17; 4:5-42;9:1-41; 11:1-45) We will have dramatic readings of these gospel passages throughout the weeks of Lent.

We will also be receiving Holy Communion at the railings during the season of Lent. You will be invited to kneel or stand, whatever is more comfortable for you, to receive the sacrament. Those who desire to be served in the pew will be able to do so. Pre-packaged communion kits are still available for anyone who wants that option
